The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the local kids frightened. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads the worst. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, late evening, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress manages to depict the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
